Specialty Dentures

Most patients who need to replace multiple teeth will choose to order dentures and be satisfied with the results but can still struggle with comfort and taste problems. Upper dentures commonly cover the soft palate of the mouth. The soft palate plays a role in taste, so when it is covered by a denture, taste is diminished as well as causing problems with speech.

Modern prosthetic dentistry has provided the Centre for Cosmetic Dentistry the ability to deal with this problem. Palateless dentures can be custom-made for patients to improve the sense of taste and comfort. Some patients who have a sensitive gag reflex will also benefit from the palateless dentures by removing the sensations closer to the back of the mouth.

Some tooth replacement methods that have been used for quite a while are considered palateless dentures. You may already have one or more in place.

• Dental implants

• Conventional palateless denture with a horseshoe-shaped frame

• Natural tooth-retained overdentures

• Fixed/removable restorations

The specialty dentures that are available at the Centre for Cosmetic Dentistry use precision attachments to keep the dentures in place. A custom milled titanium bar may be used with the attachments, and the combination will be anchored by natural teeth or dental implants, depending on the situation of the patient. Some facilities call these oral appliances a “snap-on denture,” and they are usually removable.

Another restoration that can be fixed/removable would be something such as an All-On-4 implant. This type of appliance is referred to as fixed/removable because it is fixed in the mouth but can still be removed by a dentist. Even these semi-permanent dentures feel more like natural teeth and more life-like.
